Last Light Below The MoorBy Victoria Orr Ewing

Paintings From The Moor

These paintings capture the stately emptiness and untamed beauty of Dartmoor—a landscape shaped by elemental forces and one of my most revered places. The light here transforms everything, creating a mystical quality; bad weather, often more stirring than sunshine, brings depth and drama. I strive to paint not just the land but the air around it, which becomes visible through mist and rain.

Each work centers on a specific kind of light, a soft radiance emerging from darker forms. I choose times of day and weather that convey a melancholic grace, allowing every element its own importance, with no hierarchy of meaning.

These landscapes are often devoid of detail yet reveal an expanse of space just beyond—a visual barrier where viewers are invited to peer into the infinite. They are wild, empty places, stark and haunting, with a quiet, ominous beauty. Working from life on the open moor, I depict a twilight, liminal world, where the vivid reality of place resonates as much in its absences as in its presence.
